  1. Mike Vrabel took a timeout

Mike Vrabel took a timeout late in overtime with the Tennessee Titans facing their third fourth down LeShaun Sims Jersey White , then the first-year coach pulled kicker Ryan Succop off the field.Marcus Mariota, Corey Davis and the rest of the Titans rewarded Vrabel for his big show of confidence.Mariota hit Davis with a 10-yard touchdown pass with 5 seconds remaining in overtime, and the Titans beat the Philadelphia Eagles 26-23 on Sunday for their best start since 2013."He believes in us, believes we can go get that first down and go win the game," Mariota said of Vrabel letting the offense go for a third fourth down on the final drive. "When you have a head coach that believes in you, man that means the world."Succop was lining up for a 50-yard attempt when Vrabel took the timeout. Only 17 seconds remained with the Titans facing third-and-goal when Mariota finally ended the game after 3 hours, 36 minutes."I got my heart pills coming," Vrabel joked. "I got a prescription, a big bottle. But I'm just proud of them being able to execute in the most critical of situations."The Titans trailed by 14 in the third quarter before rallying for the lead. They also trailed 23-20 in overtime before coming back again behind Mariota, who in his first start since being knocked out of the season opener with an injured elbow threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns while also running for a score. On the game-winning drive, the Titans converted three fourth downs, one by penalty. Mariota hit Taywan Taylor with a 19-yarder on fourth-and-15, and Mariota found a wide-open Dion Lewis on fourth-and-2 for a 17-yard gain. Mariota lofted the ball a bit knowing Davis would have room in the end zone for his first TD catch in the regular season."I got tackled by a bunch of teammates, but it felt good," said Davis, who finished with 161 yards receiving. The Titans (3-1) also came up with four sacks. Rookie Harold Landry got his first and also stripped Carson Wentz of the ball within the first minute of the fourth quarter, setting up the second of Succop's two field goals. The Eagles (2-2) had their chances to win both at the end of regulation and in overtime but were forced to settle for a pair of field goals by Jake Elliott."This hurts," Eagles coach Doug Pederson said. "This stings. Losses like this sting, and it's something we use as fuel for our emotion moving forward."Philadelphia had three chances inside the Tennessee 20 to win in regulation after DeAndre Carter returned a punt 42 yards to the Titans 39 with 1:41 left, but Wentz threw incomplete on first and third down. Elliott kicked a 30-yarder to force overtime. In the extra period, the Eagles had first-and-10 at the Tennessee 17 but had to settle for a 37-yard field goal by Elliott for the lead. The Eagles led 10-3 at halftime and 17-3 after a masterful drive that ate up more than 7 minutes of the third quarter before Wentz hit receiver Alshon Jeffery with a 16-yard TD .Mariota finally got the Titans' offense going after just two offensive touchdowns through the first three games. He capped a 75-yard drive with a 2-yard TD run to pull Tennessee within 17-10 late in the third, and he hit Tajae Sharpe with an 11-yard TD pass in the fourth quarter. The Eagles outgained Tennessee 432-397 with Wentz throwing for 348 yards. Jeffery finished with 105 yards receiving and a TD, and Zach Ertz had 10 catches for 112 yards.WHY PLAY FOR A TIE?"I don't know the point of having a tie in the NFL," Titans cornerback Logan Ryan said. "I don't know what it really does for the standings. I don't know who feels good about it. It probably feels like a loss. We were comfortable with the decision no matter how it went down. That puts a lot of trust in your quarterback and your offense right there."CAPTAIN COMEBACKMariota had his sixth game-winning drive since the start of the 2017 season, not counting his playoff comeback in January. Mariota had been tied with Case Keenum coming into Sunday with five in that span. Mariota now has 11 such drives in his career for the Titans.INJURIESEagles: Right guard Brandon Brooks limped to the sideline late in the fourth quarter.Titans: Linebacker Wesley Woodyard, Tennessee's leading tackler, hurt his shoulder in the first quarter and did not return. Safety Kenny Vaccaro went to the locker room with trainers late in the first half with an injured right elbow and watched the second half with his arm in a sling on the sideline.UP NEXTEagles: Host Minnesota.Titans: Visit Buffalo.Follow Teresa M. Walker at teresamwalkerTo Improve, Titans Offense Must Eliminate Mistakes It is no secret: the Tennessee Titans offense has struggled thus far in 2018.The run game has sputtered and been mostly ineffective for the better part of 5 games, as evidenced by the team’s current rank of 24th in rush DVOA (which accounts for strength of opponent) according to Football Outsiders. The Titans have played 21 total periods (counting overtime) this season. They have been held without a touchdown in 16 of those 21 quarters. The nerve injury sustained by Marcus Mariota, the multiple injuries suffered by Taylor Lewan, the devastating injury that ended Delanie Walker’s season, Jack Conklin’s recovery from a torn ACL, Dennis Kelly’s mystery illness, and the demise of Rishard Matthews have all factored in to the offense’s struggles, no doubt about it.Tyler Marz struggled mightily filling in for the injured Lewan on Sunday after the league’s highest-paid tackle exited the game with a foot injury. But the crazy part is that despite all the injuries and all the ineffectiveness, the Titans offense could be doing much better if the team could simply eliminate mental mistakes and execute when it counted. One position group that has struggled consistently with making mistakes is the team’s pass catchers, particularly when it comes to... well... catching the ball. The graphic above was posted prior to Sunday’s game at Buffalo, but I can’t imagine the number improved much after Nick Williams’ costly drop in the 4th quarter. There are lots of things that could be better about the Titans’ offense, but for today’s article, we’re just going to look at the Titans drops, because those miscues are pretty easy to identify, and for the Titans, they’ve come in pretty huge moments.I reviewed all of the Titans’ incomplete pass attempts since Week 1 and determined that there were 8 (give or take) drops by Titans receivers on balls that should’ve been caught (the most questionable one is the downfield play against the Eagles where Taywan Taylor was egregiously interfered with, drawing no flag).6 of these 8 drops occurred on third down. Let’s take a closer look at each painful drop to assess just how much damage the receivers are doing to the offensive production...NFL Gamepass. This first one came on the Titans’ very first possession of the season. The offense drove to the Dolphins 28-yard line and, facing a 3rd-and-4, Mariota lofted one into the end zone for Taywan Taylor. Now this isn’t exactly an easy catch Brynden Trawick Jersey , and there may be a small amount of pass interference, but the fact of the matter is the ball landed squarely in both of Taylor’s hands and bounced cleanly out, costing the team a touchdown. This is one you expect your starting-caliber receivers to catch. And I don’t mean this next part to be blaming Taywan Taylor for the disastrous start to the season, but hear me out - had Taylor caught this ball, every play that followed would have changed (you know, the butterfly effect and all), including (but not limited to) Marcus Mariota’s injury, Taylor Lewan’s concussion, and Delanie Walker’s broken ankle. So, all in all, a brutal first drop. Moving on...The second one came Week 3 against Jacksonville. Rishard Matthews questioned his role in the offense. Perhaps if he had managed to make this simple reception, he would’ve received more snaps...NFL Gamepass. As you can see from the endzone cam, this third-and-2 pass attempt deep in Jacksonville territory hits Rishard Matthews exactly where quarterbacks are instructed to hit their targets - in the hands directly in front of the facemask. Naturally, Rishard Matthews did not want to be a Titan anymore so rather than set the team up with a first down in the red zone, he dropped the pass, ending the drive.Moving on to later in this game...NFL Gamepass. In the second quarter, the Titans faced a 3rd-and-6 from their own 20 yard line. Tajae Sharpe does a nice job of getting open over the middle, and Mariota delivers a great throw that hits his receiver right between the numbers.Sharpe tries to corral this pass between his arms as if he’s fielding a punt. As he rolls over, the ball squirts free. Incomplete pass, drive over, Titans punt. Shall we discuss the next one?NFL Gamepass.Onto Week 4: here we have one of Mariota’s best plays as an escape artist in the pocket. Notice that it is again third down. Mariota, evading the rush, somehow keeps his balance and maneuvers back around to find an open Jonnu Smith just beyond the first down marker. Rather than use his hands, Smith goes for the ole’ bread basket catching technique, and the ball doinks straight off his chest into the ground, killing another Titans drive deep in opponent territory. Mariota’s reaction is a reflection of how we all felt. Later in the game...NFL Gamepass. This one was not on third down, and it should’ve been flagged for a pass interference penalty, as Leodis McKelvin clearly grabs Taywan Taylor’s facemask. For those reasons, this is the least egregious drop of this breakdown. Even so, Mariota delivered a beautiful pass that hits Taylor in the hands. PI or not, it’d be nice to see him catch this ball.Let’s take a look at another...NFL Gamepass. This next one, again in the Week 4 game, is a bit tougher to see, but using the end zone cam you can tell that this ball hits Taywan Taylor squarely in the chest - again on third down - and Taylor is again unable to secure the pass, thus ending another Titans drive. This next one belongs in a slapstick comedy routine...NFL Gamepass. The speedster Darius Jennings runs straight past the Philadelphia defense and Mariota delivers a perfect downfield strike, in overtime, needing a touchdown to win the game.Jennings feels compelled (for reasons unknown) to jump as the pass is arriving and thrust his chest upwards into the ball while alligator-arming the attempt to secure it. And so, with the chance to set the Titans offense up inside the red zone, the undrafted free agent proved that he is indeed capable of being yet another Titans receiver to drop a crucial pass. The Titans are very lucky that this drop did not cost them a win. I wish I could say the same about the next one...NFL Gamepass.I don’t think I need to elaborate on how devastating this drop was, as Marcus Mariota says enough with his reaction at the end of the play.Converting on third down is a great way to gain an edge in any given week. If the offense can sustain drives, it keeps the opponent off the field while increasing the team’s chances of putting points on the board. This much is obvious. So while the Titans certainly have a lot of kinks to iron out with the offense after five weeks, they’d be in a lot better shape if they hadn’t turned 6 sure-fire first downs into incompletions. Was Mariota throwing shade at his receivers with his word choice during his press conference on Sunday?(Just kidding, that’s a joke...)Before we end this breakdown focusing on the mistakes of Titans pass-catchers, I’ll leave you with one more play...
  2. Bruce Arians spoke about some

Bruce Arians spoke about some of the things Jameis Winston needs to work on"WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections 2016 NFL DraftInjuriesFree AgencyGame FilmJameis Winston “Can’t Always Be Superman”New Womens Warren Sapp Jersey ,54commentsBruce Arians spoke about some of the things Jameis Winston needs to work onESTShareTweetShareShareJameis Winston “Can’t Always Be Superman”Kim Klement-USA TODAY SportsJameis Winston has a head coach that is firmly behind him. In fact, Bruce Arians has cited Winston multiple times as one of the biggest and most intriguing reasons he came to Tampa Bay.That doesn’t mean Winston is without fault. We all know that. Winston still has a propensity to make mistakes, force passes he shouldn’t, and turn the ball over. That doesn’t mean Arians can’t - or won’t - win with him.At the NFL Scouting Combine, Arians addressed some places for improvement for Winston moving forward into the 2019 season;Arians has worked with the likes of Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, and Ben Roethlisberger and is excited for the opportunity to work with Winston. Hopefully some of these mechanical flaws and mental mistakes can be worked out in the process. Shaquem Griffin deservedly received the bulk of the attention when the Seattle Seahawks drafted the star linebacker with one hand in the fifth round and reunited him with his twin brother Shaquill. But aside from Griffin's selection, general manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll made clear the Seahawks intent to re-establish the core tenants of how they want to play: run the ball Ryan Jensen Jersey , play aggressive defense and rely on field position. It started in the first round with the selection of San Diego State running back Rashaad Penny and continued through the nine selections made. After an eventful offseason that's seen Seattle overhaul its coaching staff and say goodbye to some key veterans, the Seahawks needed to have a successful draft. Recent drafts have been filled with more misses than hits and started to catch up with Seattle last season when the depth wasn't there to overcome key injuries."We feel like we made great decisions all the way through and we'll see how it goes. You always feel that way right after," Schneider said. Here's what else to know about Seattle's nine picks, including seven on the final day:END OF THE ROAD: The end may be near for the longest-tenured Seahawks player.Seattle traded up in the fifth round to draft Texas punter Michael Dickson, who left school early for a chance at the NFL. Dickson was regarded as the top punter available in the draft and could be a sign that Jon Ryan's tenure in Seattle is coming to an end. Ryan has been with the team since 2008 and has two years left on his contract with Seattle but counts $3.2 million against the salary cap in 2018 and $3.6 million in 2019.Both Carroll and Schneider insisted Ryan will be part of the punting competition.Dickson averaged 47.4 yards per punt as a junior, was a two-time Big 12 special teams player of the year, and was the Ray Guy Award winner in 2017. Perhaps most impressive, Dickson was the MVP of the Texas Bowl victory over Missouri after downing 10 of his 11 punts inside the 20-yard line."He can do stuff with the ball we haven't seen yet so we're really intrigued to see how that translates http://www.buccaneerslockerroom.com/authentic-jason-pierre-paul-jersey ," Schneider said.RUNNIN' DOWN A DREAM: Seattle continued to focus on improving its run game on offense by drafting Washington tight end Will Dissly in the fourth round."We thought he was the best blocker in the draft," Carroll said.Dissly arrived at Washington as a defensive end but transitioned to tight end for his final two seasons. While blocking is his strength, Dissly also had 21 receptions and two TDs as a senior. Dissly is the first Washington player drafted by the Seahawks since another tight end, Jerramy Stevens, was selected in the first round in 2002.POSTION SWITCH: It wouldn't be a Seattle draft without at least one player switching positions. But this one makes sense as the Seahawks intend to use Tre Flowers at cornerback. Flowers was primarily a safety at Oklahoma State, but his size makes him a perfect fit for cornerback in Seattle. Flowers is 6-foot-3 with long arms and has experience playing some cornerback in college.SLIDING DOWN: A gem of Seattle's draft could end up being Ohio State offensive tackle Jamarco Jones, selected late in the fifth round. Jones was rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 3 offensive tackle available in the draft, but was taken with the 168th overall selection. Seattle projects Jones as a left tackle.QB CALLING: For just the second time in nine drafts Womens Mike Alstott Jersey , the Seahawks used a draft pick on a quarterback. Florida International QB Alex McGough was selected with Seattle's final pick, No. 220 overall in the seventh round. Seattle indicated this may be the year it takes a QB to develop behind Russell Wilson, the only other QB drafted by the team since 2010. McGough threw for 2,791 yards and 17 TDs as a senior, but suffered a broken collarbone in the opening minutes of FIU's bowl game in December.McGough did run some read-option in college and his mobility makes him a logical backup option to Wilson.STILL NEED: The Seahawks addressed their most pressing needs, but could still use more depth at linebacker and an offensive lineman with the ability to play center. The other area Seattle may look to target among undrafted free agents could be a bigger wide receiver, but this draft clearly defined the Seahawks are going back to relying on the run first.
  3. That epic 21-play drive Before

That epic 21-play drive Before Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers Tarvarius Moore Jersey White , head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that the San Francisco 49ers needed to solve the problems on third down, so that they could sustain drives. Well, mission accomplished.Starting at the end of first quarter, the Niners went on a 21-play drive that took 10:44 off the clock — and still only netted three points. The Chargers didn’t get the ball back until 4:59 of the second quarter. And SF converted five third downs on a single drive. Per team PR, it was the longest 49ers drive in terms of time since 2002, when they had a 20-play, 81 yard drive that lasted 12:07 and ended with a field goal. It was the most plays in a drive since the Cleveland Browns had a 21-play drive in 2015.How do you even pull off such a long drive? You can’t just be slicing through a defense; you need to mix in some penalties or sacks to make it work. So it’s not a pure sign of greatness. With the run strength and accumulating injuries of this squad, it might be increasingly common this season. The team had a 16-play drive in the fourth quarter against Kansas City, too. Here’s how this one went down:1) 1st and 10 at the SF 25 (0:43 1Q)On a typical running down, the 49ers went play action and threw a screen to George Kittle, who picked up eight yards. Nice start. Better tone it down there, though, guys. You’ll score in 10 plays at that rate.2) 2nd and 2 at the SF 33 (15:00 2Q)C.J. Beathard tripped and fumbled, but Matt Breida recovered, for a one yard loss. That’s more like it!3) 3rd and 3, SF 32 (14:12 2Q)Goodclock burning between plays, and Marquise Goodwin picks up 4 yards on a short pass. Perfect! Only one extra yard gained past the minimum needed to move the chains.4) 1st and 10, SF 36 (13:34 2Q)Goodwin gets four more on an reverse, running extra time off the clock during the play. It sure looked like he ran out of bounds but the clock keeps ticking.5) 2nd and 6, SF 40 (12:56)Play action, pass to Kyle Juszczyk is broken up by good pass coverage. Clock stops. BOOOOO!6) 3rd and 6, SF 40 (12:50)Kittle catches a pass over the middle and just barely gets the first down with YAC. Back on track! 6 plays have picked up exactly 21 yards and it’s first down again. 7) 1st and 10, SF 46 (11:57)Alfred Morris for a three yard run. He’s the master of this.8) 2nd and 7, SF 49 (11:19)Morris bursts through for 8 yards, and a first down in Chargers territory. Easy now.9) 1st and 10, LA 43 (10:43) Beathard’s pass is rejected by Derwin James like it’s a weak layup and he’s Manute Bol. Needed a finger wag.10) 2nd and 10 http://www.49erslockerroom.com/authentic-robbie-gould-jersey , LA 43 (10:40)Beathard’s soft, low pass is deflected by one Charger, then batted in the air by another, but no one manages to haul it in.Lucky, lucky break. I love the guy but sometimes it seems like he’s just woken up from a nap and playing in slow motion. NFL defenses move too fast for that.11) 3rd and 10, LA 43 (10:34) Eleven plays is already a pretty long drive, but it looks like the party is over. Shanny goes deep to Goodwin, who is blanketed all the way and has no chance to haul it in. (He was the one receiver, opposite trips. Did anyone not know the ball was going to him?)But wait - there’s hope! An illegal contact call here is perfect. First down, but you only advance 5 yards! Technically this is “no play” but I don’t care. I’m counting it.12) 1st and 10, LA 38 (10:27)11 plays done and the Niners have picked up four first downs but only advanced 37 yards. That is statistically almost perfect, for the slowest drive possible. A screen to Trent Taylor is a good call. It always helps to start in the backfield. Taylor gets 5 though and stops the clock by running out of bounds. Hmmph.13) 2nd and 5, LA 33 (9:50)Breida run loses two. Exxxxxx-celent.14) 3rd and 7, LA 35 (9:08)Derwin James plants Beathard like a tulip bulb, but not before he passes up the middle to Kittle. The 13-yard gain is way too much but the young QB was under severe pressure. I can’t hold it against him. Joe Staley is injured on the play and out for the game, which will also help slow down the drive, sadly. Garry Gilliam is the OL equivalent of a parking brake left on as you drive.15) 1st and 10, LA 22 (8:47)Getting within range of a record setting drive here, but Beathard’s gotta be careful or he’ll throw it all away with one touchdown pass. Screen pass to Breida but he gets around the corner and down to the 14, for a gain of 8. This simply will not do.But wait! Once again, salvation, this time in the form of a holding call against Garrett Celek. Normally I’d be upset, but this is an entirely new kind of Celek Time. Dude extended the drive, and I respect that.16) 1st and 16, LA 28 (8:14)Beathard keeper, runs out of bounds for no gain. Solid Terrell Owens Jersey , but should have slid in bounds to keep the clock running.17) 2nd and 16, LA 28 (7:48)If you have to pass, over the middle is the place to do it. Pierre Gar莽on gets 13 yards, stays short of sticks. That’s a smart, veteran play.18) 3rd and 3, LA 15 (7:03)Kittle in the flat, 7 yards down to the 8. This is unsustainable, guys. Dial it down.19) 1st and goal, LA 8 (6:24) Breida up the middle for one. Well done.20) 2nd and goal, LA 7 (5:44)Gar莽on gets four yards inside. Good one.21) 3rd and goal, LA 3 (5:06)Beathard wisely throws it away under heavy pressure. That’s better than risking a pick or a strip sack, but it sadly brings this epic drive to an end.22) (or 21, for those that don’t count “no plays” on penalties). 4th and goal, LA 3 (5:02)Robbie Gould kicks the field goal, putting this drive out of its misery. This was a surprising kind of marathon drive, actually — not that many penalties or sacks. Just one fumble and 2 negative plays for only 3 yards lost, total. Just two penalties, and only one was against SF. On the positive side, this shows the strength of the run game, and Beathard’s abilities in the short game. The bad thing is, there aren’t many teams with a soft-enough defense to keep drives like this going. If the four yard gains in this drive slip to 3 or 2 yards, as they will against better teams, these long drives will turn into 3-and-outs in a hurry.49ers avoided dreaded 0-2 start to the season The San Francisco 49ers improved to 1-1 on the season on Sunday, defeating the Detroit Lions by a final score of 30-27. Week 2 comes to a close later tonight when the Chicago Bears host the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football.MNF is a huge game, and really this week was a huge one for any team that opened the season 0-1. Entering Week 2, we regularly heard the stat about 0-2 teams not making the playoffs. Something like 90 percent of teams that start the regular season 0-2 do not make the playoffs. The Seahawks and Bears both lost last week Jerick McKinnon Jersey , so the loser of Monday Night Football gets to fall into that category. In reality, the stat is kind of bogus for purposes of discussion. Most teams that start 0-2 are not good football teams, and when a good team stumbles out of the gate, they’ve likely got better than 10 percent odds of making the playoffs. And yet, it is still something worth tracking because, why not? There are six teams that now sit at 0-2 following Sunday’s contests: Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, New York Giants, Oakland Raiders, Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills. Barring a tie, either the Seahawks or Bears will join this list.Meanwhile, the list of 2-0 teams features a mix of expected and unexpected teams. On the one hand, the Kansas Jacksonville Jaguars and Los Angeles Rams make sense. The Denver Broncos are not entirely shocking given their schedule to open the season, and the same holds true for the Cincinnati Bengals. The Kansas City Chiefs seem a spot below that, unless you were big on Patrick Mahomes. That leaves us with the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Dolphins beat the Tennessee Titans at home and then beat the New York Jets on the road. Neither were gimmes, but they were not shocking wins. The Bucs, on the other hand, are a whole different beast. They went into the Big Easy and beat the New Orleans Saints in a shootout, and then welcomed the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles with a victory. How for real are the Bucs? Our 49ers sit at 1-1, a game back of the Rams in the NFC West. I am fascinated to see what comes of tonight’s Seahawks-Bears game. I am picking the Bears to win and cover the 4.5 point spread, in part because I think their defensive front will decimate that Seahawks offensive line. Of course, underdogs were 10-4 against the spread on Sunday, so I would not be at all surprised to see the Seahawks go on the road and knock off the Bears. Chicago could have a great defense this year, but they still have a second-year quarterback facing a lot of questions. But a 1-1 Seahawks team is a lot different than an 0-2 Seahawks squad in my mind.

If the Minnesota Vikings make the playoffs this weekend, it will mean that the Seattle Seahawks have played every NFC postseason team this year save for themselves and the New Orleans Saints. In those games, they beat the Dallas Cowboys and Vikings, while losing twice to the LA Rams and once to the Chicago Bears. In my opinion there’s only one team in the NFC — in reality, the whole NFL — that I don’t think you want to face if you don’t have to and that’s the Saints.New Orleans is one home game against the Carolina Panthers away from finishing 14-2 and that alone puts them a step ahead of every team. Records can be deceiving but the Saints’ isn’t. It’s surprising to me that they’re only third in DVOA, but they’re second in weighted DVOA and only .2% behind the Kansas City Chiefs for first. Yes, Drew Brees is the face of the city and having another season appropriate for potentially the best quarterback of all-time but what sets this Saints team apart from the many that have let Brees down over the years is a defense that ranks 10th by DVOA.Consider that New Orleans has twice looked this good: in 2009 and in 2011. They went 13-3 in both of those season with a point differential of +169 in the former and +208 in the latter. This season, they are +170 and actually if they lost 21-20 to the Panthers this Sunday, they’d have the exact same record, point differential, points scored, and points allowed as they did in ‘09.And they won the Super Bowl that year. The issue in 2011 was that there were too many good teams and beyond all reasonable expectations http://www.seahawkslockerroom.com/authentic-tyler-lockett-jersey , the Saints won their last eight games, finished 13-3, and still had to play a wild card game. They hosted the Detroit Lions and won 42-28 but then had to go on the road to face the 13-3 San Francisco 49ers. The 15-1 Green Bay Packers took the one-seed (and had an even more disappointing postseason) while San Francisco got the two-seed by way of conference record. The Niners scored 380 points that year, compared to 547 for Brees and co.The Saints went 9-0 at home that season, including the wild card game, but were just 5-4 on the road following a divisional round loss to the Niners. As you probably recall in that classic game, the lead changed four times in the final four minutes, with Alex Smith giving San Francisco the 36-32 win by way of a touchdown throw to Vernon Davis with :09 seconds left.If that game is played in New Orleans, I could see a different result. This year, the road to the Super Bowl does go through New Orleans. At least, unless you get super lucky and avoid it, which is what the Seahawks should be hoping to do.If Seattle beats the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday, they’ll guarantee themselves the five-seed. If they lose, they open the door for the Minnesota Vikings to take the five and push the Seahawks down to the six. There is only one opponent they could possibly face in that scenario, which would be the Chicago Bears. No, they cannot face the LA Rams in the first round because in order for the Rams to fall to the three seed, it will mean that the Bears beat the Vikings and therefore, Seattle would be the five seed.Say whatever you want about the matchup vs the Cowboys compared to the matchup vs the Bears, here’s what I can guarantee: If the Seahawks are the six seed, and they win, they have no choice but to go to New Orleans. That’s not a scenario I’d be looking forward to and it’s one you want to put on hold while also crossing fingers that somebody can upset the Saints in the same way that the New York Giants shocked everyone and upset the Packers in 2011.But if they’re the five seed, there’s still a chance that the Seahawks will play the two seed if they happen to advance past the wild card round. If that team happens to be the Rams, you, me, and everyone we know is aware of how close Seattle was to beating LA in both matchups this season. If it’s the Bears, I’d still say that they present a much more favorable matchup than New Orleans does, even in freezing, outdoor conditions. And of course if the Seahawks secure the five seed and it ends up mattering in that way, i.e. if the six seed upsets the three seed and sends Seattle to the two seed, then it keeps hope alive for the most important scenario of all: not just avoiding New Orleans entirely but hosting an NFC Championship game. All of that is too far down the line to really care about, I know it, but what all of that information actually does is this: gives more weight to Seattle’s game against the Cardinals this Sunday. It does matter. They can’t bank on the Vikings losing. They’re at home vs the worst offense in the NFL. They do need to win this one and move into the playoffs with a 10-6 record and a better opportunity. Seeding has had huge implications throughout NFL playoff history and this is no different. It may seem like a small thing, but this win could actually be very significant.

Adam Schefter is reporting that the former Baltimore Ravens defensive end Brent Urban is visiting the Titans today:Ravens’ free-agent DE Brent Urban is visiting the Titans today Taylor Lewan Jersey , per source.—..."Adam Schefter is reporting that the former Baltimore Ravens defensive end Brent Urban is visiting the Titans today:Urban was a 4th round pick of the Ravens back in 2014 and has been a starter for them. He isn’t a guy that is going to come in a transform the Titans defensive line (he only has 3.5 sacks in his career), but with the lack of talent they have upfront it wouldn’t hurt to bring in competition. Defensive line remains one of the biggest needs on this team. Urban would be a solid addition, but it wouldn’t really move the needle in terms of where defensive line falls in draft needs for the Titans. It is still right at the top of the list.It has been a tough offseason for the Ravens defense. They have already lost 5 guys that started on defense for them last season. I really hate that for them! In early 2000, a then-14-year-old Sean McVay attended Super Bowl XXXIV. In his hometown of Atlanta. Involving the then-St. Louis Rams, which won the only Lombardi Trophy in franchise history.Nineteen years later, a soon-to-be-33-year-old McVay will return to Atlanta as coach of the now-L.A. Rams, with Super Bowl LIII on the line.“I was so young at the time, but I remember it was a great game,” McVay told reporters on Monday. “I remember, for whatever reason Jurrell Casey Jersey White , I really always respected both the offenses. I thought [Titans running back] Eddie George was outstanding. [Titans quarterback] Steve McNair’s ability to create off-schedule. [Titans defensive end] Jevon Kearse, that was his rookie year where he was having a lot of success.“Then, you look offensively at [Rams quarterback] Kurt Warner and how prolific he was. I can still remember [Rams receiver] Torry Holt catching that slant. [Rams receiver] Isaac Bruce making big plays. [Rams running back] Marshall [Faulk’s] versatility. Just a fan of the game and watching that.“I’ll tell you what’s so unique, is you get a chance to be in this role and the exposure that it gets you to people that you have so much respect for. Coach [Dick] Vermeil is a guy that, he texts you after all the games and he’s been so supportive. Watching the way that he connected with those guys and wasn’t afraid to say, ‘I love you’, to these guys. I think those players could feel how much he really cared about them and how much he was invested. You talk about some of the adversity that that team, specifically being our organization, faced early on in the year when no one gave him a chance, but they kept believing. Kurt Warner went on to have such a great season. I also remember it was very icy then http://www.thetitanslockerroom.com/authentic-jayon-brown-jersey , so it was a real problem for us to get there, but it was a great game. My grandpa got us tickets and that was a good birthday present for me.”So McVay and his legendary memory can rattle off everything that happened in the game that the Rams won when Titans receiver Kevin Dyson was tackled just short of the end zone, right?“No. No, definitely not,” McVay said, laughing.Nineteen years from now, chances are that Sean McVay will be able to rattle off everything that will happen in 13 days, when he returns to the new Atlanta stadium built close to the site of the stadium that hosted Super Bowl XXIV.

  7. General managers John Elway

General managers John Elway and John Lynch share a bond going back three decades Ronnie Lott Jersey , one built on respect, rivalry and reverence."He was the poster I had on my wall," said Lynch, who's 11 years younger than Elway, 58. "He was the idol I had growing up."The Broncos (6-6) play the 49ers (2-10) Sunday in the latest chapter of the friendly feud between the two superstars-turned-GMs whose paths have crisscrossed throughout their careers, both on the football field and the front office. Both were tutored by celebrated California high school football coach Jack Neumeier and both were Stanford quarterbacks before starring in Denver, albeit a decade apart and at different positions.Lynch prepared for his move into the front office by serving a sort of apprenticeship under Elway, attending the 2013 NFL combine with him and sitting in with the Broncos' GM during the draft.Yet, it was 20 years earlier when Elway first lent Lynch a helping hand, as both men recalled during one of Lynch's scholarship lunches a couple of years ago."I knew that Johnny was nervous, this being his first preseason game," Elway remembered. "So, we're in the first quarter and Johnny's out there and our cadence back in that time was Set-Hut. I was always famous for saying, 'Red 98 Red 98. Set-Hut!' Well I saw Johnny Lynch out there, I said, 'Set-Het, Red 98. Hey, Johnny Lynch!'"The shout-out impressed the rookie's Tampa Bay teammates."I came back to the huddle and it was so funny because all the guys said, 'You know Elway?' I said, yeah, we're tight," Lynch recounted.Years later, after they really had bonded Tom Rathman Jersey , Lynch said Elway told him, "I was trying to loosen you up. I knew you were tight."Elway waited until after the game, however, to deliver the tip that really helped Lynch, who went on to earn nine trips to the Pro Bowl, including in all four of his seasons in Denver.Elway told Lynch he knew exactly when he was going to blitz and when he wasn't just by reading his eyes."I look at Johnny Lynch and if he kept looking at me, I knew I was OK, I knew he wasn't coming," Elway explained. If Lynch darted his eyes away, the Broncos QB knew Lynch was coming at him off the edge."I guess he figured if he didn't see me, I didn't see him," Elway said. "I knew when he was coming. I told him that after the game and obviously he took that to heart."Lynch said Elway told him to "just look at me like you normally do. So, I used that throughout my career" to disguise his intentions. When he was offered the 49ers job last year, Lynch, who felt he might be too green, again sought Elway's advice."Yeah, he's been awesome. He's a great friend and he exposed me to the business," Lynch said. "I think the biggest thing, when I had this opportunity presented to me really quickly and had a short, finite time to give them an answer, he kind of gave me the confidence: 'You know what, you can do this, just like anything else. You can be great at it.' And hearing that from him kind of emboldened me to feel that way."Their respective teams are heading in different directions. The 49ers have struggled since losing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a knee injury and are jockeying for the top overall pick in the 2019 draft. The Broncos have won three straight and are pushing for their first playoff appearance since 2015."He helped me out in the beginning but now it's like anything else Patrick Willis Jersey , we're competing," Lynch said. "Fortunately, we're not in the same division and all, but he's been great. He's one of my best friends in life and we understand that we both have to serve our organizations well, but we can also continue to be great friends and that's what we are." It’s hard to believe just over a year ago, Kyle Shanahan was telling fans to be patient. That, of course, was said in 2017 B.G. (Before Garoppolo) Once Jimmy Garoppolo came to took over as the starter, patience went out the window. Sure the 49ers were developing, but not in a Cleveland Browns, three win season, kind of development. Which is why it’s hard for everyone to realize this is still a rebuild. It’s still a two-three year rebuild, even with Garoppolo under center. It’s just now a two-three rebuild with the season from hell. The 49ers want a win, need a win. The aforementioned Browns have more wins than they do. Of course that could mean they could do something drastic for 2018, even though this is part of a much larger picture. Kyle Shanahan was asked about if the 1-6 start was impacting the long-term goals of this team and mentioned doing something drastic (like a trade) isn’t in the cards: The NFL trade deadline has already had some craziness going on with Oakland Raiders wide receiver Amari Cooper getting dealt to the Dallas Cowboys. Last year around this time, the 49ers sent a second round pick to the New England Patriots for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. When the trade was completed, Shanahan was quick to say Garoppolo was for the future, not for the 2017 season. If this losing season stunts the growth, we’ll know in a year or two, but it seems like Shanahan is still looking at the bigger picture. Even if this losses may make him feel pressured to do something drastic. If the future is in mind, then maybe things are going according to plan. But maybe getting another splashy trade for the future wouldn’t hurt.
  8. The LA Chargers are clearly a formidable team with or without Joey Bosa. Still Sweezy Jersey , the Seattle Seahawks would surely like to avoid Bosa if they can and despite reports that the Pro Bowl/2016 Defensive Rookie of the Year was likely to make his season debut this week, it seems as though that will probably not be the case. At least according to the former team doctor for the Chargers, David Chao:Chao notes that getting into a three-point stance and running straight ahead is good progress for Bosa, who has missed all seven games this season with a bone bruise in his foot, but not nearly good enough to signal that Bosa can explode out of that stance or torque his body around an offensive tackle, which puts way more pressure on the injured foot.LA has often had issues to open the season and Bosa’s injury seemed to be yet another sign of a sad September for the Chargers, but they are 5-2 with their only losses coming against the 7-1 Kansas City Chiefs and 8-0 LA Rams. That being said, LA’s five wins have come against poor competition and the Chargers defense without Bosa has yet to display true dominance: they are 23rd in net yards per pass attempt allowed and are led in sacks by safety Derwin James and defensive end Melvin Ingram, who each have 3.5. Bosa has 23 sacks in his first 28 games despite holding out to open his rookie campaign in 2016. The Chargers were third in points allowed last season with a healthy Bosa, ranking third in net yards/pass attempt allowed and featuring 12.5 sacks from Bosa, 10 sacks from Ingram, and three other players with at least four sacks. Isaac Rochell Duane Brown Jersey , a seventh round pick in 2017, started the first three games of the season at defensive end. Then Damion Square, a 29-year-old former undrafted free agent, has started the last four. Overall, the Chargers’ attempt to fill-in Bosa has been using the most complicated and involved defensive line rotation of defensive coordinator Gus Bradley’s career:Square and Rochell each have two sacks, as does defensive tackle Darius Philon. Former Seattle defensive tackle Brandon Mebane, still active and starting weekly at age 33, has 22 tackles and one sack. With Duane Brown and Tyler Lockett each signing new contracts with Seattle in August, and the team unwilling to do the same for safety Earl Thomas ahead of his season-ending injury earlier this month, defensive end Frank Clark has become the most pressing potential contract extension for the Seahawks.Clark is set to reach free agency in March after his initial four-year rookie contract as a second-round pick in 2015 comes to an end. But Clark isn’t pushing hard to get a new deal done with the Seahawks as soon as possible. According to Brady Henderson of ESPN.com, Clark’s agent, Erik Burkhardt Marshawn Lynch Jersey , said Clark has taken out an insurance policy to cover any potential loss in value due to an injury prior to reaching free agency. They don’t intend to settle for a deal now that will appear to be below market value when new deals are dished out around the league in March.“Obviously players want a long-term deal because this game is dangerous and violent and everything else, but I’m going to continue to bet on my guy.” Burkhardt said. “You look at a guy like聽Kirk Cousins聽who played out the franchise tag, that’s not all bad either. He did that because he believed in himself and also knows teams can’t usually find top quarterbacks in free agency. The pass-rush market is much the same in that aspect. It’s supply and demand.”Clark is putting together his best season with the Seahawks. He’s recorded 5.5 sacks with an interception and two forced fumbles in the first six games of the season. Clark had another would-be strip-sack of Jared Goff in Week Five only for Goff to pick up the loose ball and throw it away, negating the statistic. Even without Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril to help take some of the attention away from Clark, he’s still causing problems for opposing offensive lines.Clark has 24.5 sacks since the start of the 2016 season are tied for 10th most in the league over that span. Burkhardt believes Clark is every bit that type of talent and can command top-end pass rusher money on the open market.“I don’t care if those guys were high first-round picks,” he said. “I don’t mind being quoted saying I absolutely put Frank in that echelon with those guys, so I’m not going to sit here and do a deal early and then watch in March when those guys get $X million a year and Frank not be in that range. Why would we do that? I feel like I have just as good of a player, and I want to be very clear, that is not a knock on anybody. Frank is on that level and I believe everybody around the league will tell you that as well.”He made it clear that they have a great relationship with the Seahawks and have had good discussions with the team about a possible new deal with the team. However, they want any new deal to adequately represent Clark’s value and believe that deal will most likely come upon reaching free agency.
  9. The Washington Capitals

COLUMBUS Richard Panik Jersey , Ohio (AP) — The Washington Capitals seemed a step faster than the discombobulated Columbus Blue Jackets all night long and took full advantage of some early opportunities. The result was a 4-0 win by the Capitals over the Blue Jackets on Saturday that seemed so easy it was difficult to tell at times that these were two teams fighting for the lead in the rugged Metropolitan Division. For most of the evening, the Blue Jackets didn’t look like they belonged on the same ice with the reigning Stanley Cup champions.Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 22nd goal and Braden Holtby got his 34th career shutout as the Capitals stayed atop the division, moving three points ahead of Columbus.“It probably helped that we saw what didn’t and what worked against them in the playoffs last year,” said Holtby, who picked up his second shutout of the season. “And so our team knows you can’t play a soft game against them because they’ll turn it the other way quick. Tonight we played the right way and got rewarded for it.”Travis Boyd had a goal and an assist, and Brett Connolly and Dmitrij Jaskin also scored for Washington. Holtby finished with 28 saves.Ovechkin extended his points streak to 11 straight games, with 10 goals and six assists during the stretch. He also picked up an assist on Boyd’s third-period goal.Washington coach Todd Reirden said his captain is contributing in every possible way.“A lot was made of his leadership with us winning the Stanley Cup and the role that he had in it, but his leadership during the regular season this year is the best I’ve seen,” Reirden said.“That says a lot about him and how he’s really leading the way. He’s been more vocal, obviously his play has been exceptional, and he’s been night-in and night-out a guy who has played at both ends of the ice and gave us a chance to have success.”The Capitals, whose three-goal first period overpowered the Blue Jackets, have won two in a row and eight of their last 11.Connolly started it 1:42 into the game when he skated in on a rush and poked the puck around the back of lunging goalie Sergei Bobrovsky.Jaskin got credit for a lucky tally halfway through the period when a shot from Boyd hit Jaskin’s left skate and popped over Bobrovsky’s shoulder. It was the first goal of the year for the Washington fourth-liner.Ovechkin’s goal in the closing seconds of the first period was anything but lucky. He was left wide open in front of the net to tap in a pass from Michal Kempny. After that, Columbus coach John Tortorella had seen enough and replaced Bobrovsky with Joonas Korpisalo to start the second period Womens Shane Doan Jersey , which seemed to help. After a scoreless second, Boyd got his first goal of the season late in the third to cap the scoring.Bobrovsky had 10 saves in the first period for Columbus, and Korpisalo recorded 14 the rest of the way.“I don’t see us doing the things necessary to win hockey games at crucial times, and they did,” Columbus captain Nick Foligno said. “They played the right way. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Toronto Maple Leafs looked like a well-rested team coming off a five-day holiday break. They were fast and opportunistic in handling the Columbus Blue Jackets, who were playing the second night of a back-to-back.John Tavares scored two goals, and backup goalie Garret Sparks had 27 saves to lift the streaking Maple Leafs over Columbus 4-2 on Friday night.“Sometimes after a few days you can feel a little flat, just out of rhythm and just timing and everything, so I thought overall we played a pretty solid game,” Tavares said. “Sparky was solid and made some big saves when we needed him to, our penalty kill Anders Bjork Jersey , I thought, was really sharp, so it was good to start the way we did and build on it and not give them a whole lot.”Tavares’ two first-period goals nicely set up a return to Toronto on Saturday, when he will face his former team, the New York Islanders. He played there for nine seasons before joining his hometown Maple Leafs in a seven-year, $77 million deal last summer.Tavares’ linemate, Mitch Marner, had a goal and assisted on both his tallies, and Frederik Gauthier also scored to power the Maple Leafs to their fifth straight win, matching the longest streak of the season. They are a distant second to Tampa Bay in the Atlantic Division.Nick Foligno and Artemi Panarin scored for Columbus, and Sergei Bobrovsky had 25 saves. The Blue Jackets, playing on consecutive nights, saw their five-game winning streak snapped as they try to stay close to Washington at the top of the Metropolitan Division. But coach John Tortorella wasn’t overly critical of his team’s play.“We had some zone time, generated some chances Bobby Orr Jersey , their goalie played well,” Tortorella said. “Give him some credit. But some of our chances, especially from our back end, were shot wide.”Toronto took advantage of a power play early in the game when a shot by Nazem Kadri from slot was deflected in off Tavares’ skate . Foligno tied it up shortly afterward when he snapped a shot between Sparks’ pads from the right circle.Tavares second goal in the first period didn’t require puck luck. He rifled a shot from the left circle that went top shelf over Bobrovsky’s glove and gave Toronto a 2-1 lead.Marner gave Toronto a two-goal lead halfway through the second on a 4-on-4, when he raced ahead of Pierre Luc-Dubois on a rush, took a beautiful pass from Auston Matthews and swept it past Bobrovsky.Late in the third, Par Lindholm shoveled the puck out from the back of the net to set up a finish by Gauthier . Panarin got his 100th NHL goal with 1:28 left in the game.Columbus came up empty on a pair of power plays and has scored just once in 33 attempts with a man-advantage in the last 11 games.NOTES: Tavares’ 26 goals lead the team. Our work is cut out for us.”The Golden Knights went up 1-0 at 4:55 when Carrier when he redirected Cody Eakin’s shot past Quick, but the Kings tied it at with 5 seconds left in the opening period when Kopitar tapped in Sean Walker’s shot between Subban’s legs.Subban was able to immediately move past allowing the late goal Steven Kampfer Jersey Womens , saying he treated it as a brand new game was about to start. Stastny said that attitude is what has made Subban so effective working behind starter Marc-Andre Fleury, even if it hasn’t resulted in wins.“He’s been patient,” Stastny said. “He’s had a positive attitude, and he knows it’s going to come.”Tuch’s 13th goal of the season would end up being all the support Subban needed, but Karlsson scored on a breakaway off a stretch pass by Nate Schmidt to extend the lead to 3-1 at 3:20 of the third.Stastny added an empty-netter with 2:32 remaining, giving him four goals and three assists in eight games since returning from a lower-body injury that caused him to miss 30 games. The Kings had their longest winning streak of the season ended, along with a season-best stretch of five straight games earning at least one point.“The big thing is now we can’t let this one (loss) turn into two and three and four,” Kopitar said.NOTES: Golden Knights D Colin Miller (upper body) was placed on injured reserve. … The Golden Knights claimed F Valentin Zykov off waivers from Edmonton. 11. If Saturday night was any indication

If Saturday night was any indication Authentic Jonathan Toews Jersey , Eeli Tolvanen is ready for his second try at the NHL.The 19-year old Tolvanen, who looked overmatched in three games late last season, was called up Saturday morning from Milwaukee of the AHL due to another wave of injuries and illness that left the Nashville Predators without three of their top six forwards for a game against the Chicago Blackhawks. All Tolvanen did was pot his first NHL goal and add an assist in a four-goal first period that lifted Nashville to a 5-2 win, enabling it to regain sole possession of first place in the Central Division and the Western Conference.Article continues below ...Tolvanen and the Predators will try to close out a five-game homestand with a victory Monday night when they meet the Buffalo Sabres at Bridgestone Arena. With Filip Forsberg (broken hand) and Nick Bonino (illness) added to a growing injury list that includes defenseman P.K. Subban, right winger Viktor Arvidsson and center Kyle Turris, Nashville’s once-formidable depth is being stretched to its limits. The performance of Tolvanen, whose goal came on a wicked backhander to the top right corner, can only give the Predators hope and belief he might be ready to make the contribution they’ve believed he can since picking him in the first round of the 2017 draft.“I thought he moved through the game really well,” Nashville coach Peter Laviolette said. “When he gets those opportunities in front of the net like he did tonight, it shows the talent he has to put the puck in the net. I thought the way he moved up and down the ice was great.”There was talk that when the Predators assigned Tolvanen to the AHL, he might return to the KHL. But Tolvanen took his nightly shifts in Milwaukee, scoring four goals and seven assists in 21 games, and averaging more than two shots per game.Tolvanen said his time in Milwaukee also helped him defensively.“I felt like I was more comfortable with the game system and all the guys there and the coaching staff Blake Comeau Jersey Womens ,” he said. “I think it’s helped me a lot with my defensive game and just being more comfortable out there.”While Nashville (18-8-1) is hoping to finish its homestand at 3-2-0, Buffalo (17-7-3) is aiming to get back into the win column to close out a three-game road trip. After Tampa Bay ended the Sabres’ 10-game winning streak Thursday night with a 5-4 verdict, Florida dumped them 3-2 Friday night in overtime.Still, it’s been quite a turnaround for Buffalo, which was the worst team in the NHL in 2017-18. A third of the way through this season, it’s on pace for 111 points and is challenging Tampa Bay and Toronto for the Atlantic Division lead.“You talk about every team being ready. They know about the streak now,” said Sabres coach Phil Housley, a former assistant under Laviolette in Nashville. “They see where we are in the standings and we’re going to get everybody’s best game.”Former Predators backup goalie Carter Hutton (12-7-1, 2.63 goals-against average, .917 save percentage) is expected to oppose Pekka Rinne (11-4-1, 1.86, .934) in net. WASHINGTON (AP) — Braden Holtby worried the Washington Capitals might come out flat against a last-place New Jersey Devils team that was missing several regulars, so he made sure he was on his game from the moment the puck was dropped. He was right Patrick Kane Jersey , and he was ready.Holtby stopped 25 shots to help the slow-starting Capitals shut out the Devils 3-0 on Friday night for their sixth consecutive victory. It wasn’t pretty, but it was good enough to put the defending Stanley Cup champions back in sole possession of first place in the Metropolitan Division.“Playing a team like them with a ton of injuries, you don’t really know,” Holtby said. “I was just trying to be prepared thinking that might happen and be there (and) do my job.”Holtby did his job by robbing All-Star Kyle Palmieri in the first period and making a handful of other important saves in a game that shouldn’t have been so close. With his 35th career shutout, Holtby tied Olie Kolzig for the most in franchise history.Andre Burakovsky extended his goal streak to three games by finishing off a rush 2:40 in, and Nicklas Backstrom scored on the power play in the third period. Lars Eller sealed it with an empty-netter in the final minute of a game that was hardly a masterpiece with the puck bouncing all over bad ice and a playoff contender at times playing down to its competition.“I feel like games like this are going to happen,” Backstrom said. “Even if we didn’t play our best, it’s a good thing that we came out of it with two points. But we’re a smart group in here. We realize we can play a lot better. We’re going to take these two points and move forward.”There were some positives, such as a 6-for-6 showing on the penalty kill and scoring from the fourth line. But after the Capitals had just three shots to show for more than four minutes of power-play time in the first period, assistant coach Blaine Forsythe was sharply critical at the first intermission.“We have every reason to be motivated given the standings,” Forsythe said on the team’s radio network. “That was garbage, that period, to be honest with you. We got outworked in every aspect of the game. That can’t happen. We’ve got to be way better.”Washington took six minor penalties over the course of the game but got better as it went along.“We progressed and figured out a way http://www.officialavalanche.com/authentic-adidas-alexander-kerfoot-jersey ,” defenseman John Carlson said. “They all count the same.”The same couldn’t be said of the Devils, who lost their fifth in a row. Without last year’s NHL MVP, Taylor Hall, and five other lineup mainstays, New Jersey went 0 for 6 on the power play to extend its drought to 0 for 24 over its past nine games.Rookie goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood did his best to keep the Devils in the game by making 33 saves, and coach John Hynes was proud of his team’s work ethic against long odds.“I thought we had opportunities to score,” Hynes said. “I thought we worked for them. I thought we had some Grade A chances. Unfortunately, the puck didn’t go in for us, but you can’t fault the effort.”NOTES: Palmieri returned after missing four games with a lower-body injury. … Devils forward John Quenneville returned after missing four games with an upper-body injury. … C Nico Hischier and F Jesper Bratt didn’t make the trip after being injured Tuesday. … Capitals D Brooks Orpik played his 40th game of the season and cashed in on a $250,000 contract incentive. .. NASHVILLE Adoree' Jackson Jersey , Tenn. (AP) — running back David Fluellen on injured reserve and filled his roster spot by promoting linebacker Nigel Harris from the practice squad. The Titans announced the moves Thursday. One of four running backs on the roster, Fluellen had missed the past five games with an injured knee. With the Titans declaring linebackers Brian Orakpo (elbow) and Sharif Finch (left shoulder) out after practice Thursday, they needed another linebacker for depth. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Harris played in eight games as an undrafted rookie out of South Florida in 2017 with five games with the Chargers, two with the Giants and one for Tampa Bay. Harris spent part of this season on Arizona's practice squad before joining the Titans' practice squad in October.Four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jurrell Casey, who was limited Thursday by a knee, is expected to play Saturday for the Titans (8-6) against Washington (7-7) along with linebacker Wesley Woodyard. Wide receiver Tajae Sharpe, who did not practice all week, is questionable with an injured ankle. We’re still unsure how the quarterback class will shake out in the 2019 NFL draft. Things got a little murkier when Justin Herbert announced that he’d be returning to Oregon instead of declaring for the draft. One name worth monitoring going forward is Gardner Minshew, the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year.Minshew transferred to Washington State in the fall of 2018 and lead Mike Leach’s team to a school-record-tying 10 wins in 2018. Now he’s hoping to further cement his draft status with a strong performance at next month’s Senior Bowl.Minshew recently spoke exclusively with MCM about his lone season at Washington State Ben Jones Jersey , how operating as the leader in coach Leach’s system gives him a competitive advantage over the other quarterbacks in this class, and which throws he’d most like to have back.JM: Where were you when you found about your Senior Bowl invite and what was your initial reaction like?GM: Here’s what happened. I was actually in the shower (laughs). Coach [Steve] Spurrier Jr. called me and of course I answer his call. He asked me if I had received any mail from the Senior Bowl. I was like no? He’s like, “well, you’re invited.” That’s how I found out (laughs). I thought it was awesome. That’s basically how the conversation went. I went back to my shower and found the letter in the mail later that day.JM: What’s the lasting impression you’re hoping to leave on the general managers and scouts in attendance?GM: At the game? I want to show them that I’m capable of leading a team. That’s the kinda guy I am. They can count on me every game. I plan on going out there and proving that on every play and during every quarter. I’m gonna give it my all. I hope they realize I’m the kinda guy who puts the team before himself.JM: Which traits of yours would you say improved the most from last year to this year?GM: I would just point to my confidence. I have a lot of confidence in myself. I’ve really become more of a leader over the past year. I have confidence in my ability and I trust the guys around me to go out there and make plays. I play the game with a little bit of reckless abandon.JM: What was the transition like for you this year coming to Washington State?GM: It was a lot of fun. I came here on pretty short notice. I got to know everybody quickly and we developed a relationship rather quickly. We had to build trust in one another. I had great teammates and a coaching staff that was able to get me up to speed on everything. They made it pretty easy on me.JM: How would you describe coach Leach’s offensive system?GM: It’s all about space. We look to attack space and attack what the defense gives us. We spread the ball around to a bunch of different people. We’re always talking about balance, and balance isn’t a run-pass thing, it’s about getting the ball to all the guys on your offense. That’s something I think we do well. It’s all about taking what the defense gives you.JM: How did playing in this offense help get you ready for the next level?GM: One of the biggest things is that this system puts a lot of the decision making on the shoulders of the quarterback. A lot of the time, you get a few plays to choose from pre-snap and it’s my job to put the team in the best position. At other schools, you see a lot of quarterbacks who get a play call and look over to the sideline for guidance on what to do with the ball. That’s not realistic. You can’t play quarterback like that at the next level. In this offense, you’re making decisions, you’re making different reads. Essentially http://www.thetitanslockerroom.com/authentic-delanie-walker-jersey , we throw the ball 50-60 times a game. I rather take the guy that’s throwing it rather than handing it off 50 times a game. I don’t understand why that’s such a big deal. How does that get you ready for the pro’s? Anybody can hand the ball off.JM: You’re not wrong about that. I love how blunt that answer was. Which responsibilities did you have at the line of scrimmage?GM: My job was to put the offense in the best situation possible. It’s not always about trying to find the perfect play, but rather finding the play with the best value based on what the defense gives you. It’s just about putting our offense in a good situation and giving us a chance to succeed.JM: How did coach Leach help you improve your game this year?GM: He put so much trust in me. It really helped raise the level of my confidence. I never had to worry about making a mistake. I was encouraged to attack the defense and to get after them. That’s been a lot of fun for me.JM: He seems to go viral every other day with a different clip or quote. Is he really the character that people think he is?GM: Yeah, that’s who he is. It’s like that every day (laughs). People always ask me for Leach stories and I swear to God I can tell a new story every day. It’s sorta the norm. You get used to it after a while.JM: Is there one throw you’d like to have back? I know that’s a tough question but can you recall one or two in particular?GM: Man, that’s tough. I don’t really dwell on anything like that. It’s all about putting a bad play behind you and rebounding from it. I’d have to point towards something that happened in the USC or Washington games since those are the only two we lost all year. All the other ones don’t really matter because we won those games. You can pick something out from the games against USC or Washington.JM: If you could play with one NFL receiver, who would you choose and why?GM: I’d have to go with Julio Jones. He’s kind of the perfect receiver. He’s a big guy and he plays that way in the air, but he runs like a little guy. He’s just a freak of nature. He has crazy range. He can really go up and get it. He’s always making something happen after the catch. He’d be a lot of fun to play with.JM: I think a lot of people would agree with you on that. I’ve really appreciated your time today, Gardner. You’ve been a great sport. What can fans expect from Gardner Minshew going forward?GM: They can expect the same thing they’ve been getting from me. I’m gonna show up to work every day and try to improve those around me. I’m gonna be a leader for my teammates and continue to play the game with a lot of passion. I’m excited about what’s ahead. I’m gonna lay it all out there.
  13. The Tampa

TAMPA http://www.buccaneerslockerroom.com/authentic-beau-allen-jersey , Fla. (AP) 鈥?Bay Buccaneers are searching for a new coach for the fifth time in 10 years. History says they'll set their sights on a big name, but not necessarily land their first or even second choice.General manager Jason Licht said Monday he's just "grateful" to have an opportunity to lead the effort to replace Dirk Koetter, who was fired after going 19-29 with no playoff appearances over three seasons."Ultimately, the results and wins just weren't there," Licht said. "Collectively, everyone in the organization has fallen short of expectations of what we thought we could do."The move to dismiss Koetter was not a surprise. After going 9-7 in his first season after being promoted from offensive coordinator in January 2016, Koetter followed with consecutive 5-11 finishes that extended Tampa Bay's playoff drought to 11 years.lightWhat's more puzzling is how Licht retained his job despite a spotty track record in the draft and free agency. The Bucs are 27-53 since he took over as GM in 2014."Right now, I'm just grateful to be here," Licht said, without elaborating on why he deserved to stay while Koetter was let go after constructing an offense that ranked among the best in the NFL statistically, including No. 1 in passing yards.Instead, the GM reiterated he is committed to finding the right coach to lead a talented young team moving forward."It's been disappointing for the entire organization, but we are determined to get back on track," Licht said. The GM also made it clear that Koetter's replacement will inherit Jameis Winston as his quarterback. The No. 1 overall pick from the 2015 draft is due to earn $20.92 million next season in the final year of the contract he signed as a rookie."He has done some amazing things for a young 24, turns 25 in a week, quarterback that's accomplished more than most of the elite quarterbacks did at his age," the GM said. "There's a lot to like about Jameis; Jameis will be here next year."The Glazer family that owns the team rarely grants interviews and is especially tight-lipped during coaching searches.Early speculation about Tampa Bay's latest opening centers around someone with a proven track record such as Jim or John Harbaugh if they become available, former Packers coach Mike McCarthy or maybe former Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, who worked with Licht while both were in Arizona. The next coach will be the fifth the Bucs have hired since Jon Gruden was fired after the 2008 season. Tampa Bay has not won a playoff game since its Super Bowl run under Gruden 16 years ago. Raheem Morris, Greg Schiano Demar Dotson Jersey , Lovie Smith and Koetter were not the solution.Licht, who will be assisted by a search firm, is focused on hiring the "right fit" as opposed to an offense- or defense-minded replacement.Asked if the search might include candidates who'd like control of personnel decisions that might ordinarily be handled by a GM, Licht said he's a team player."I'm not going to get in the way, and let an ego get in the way, of getting the right guy here," the GM said. "My job right now is to get the best fit for the head football coach, period. Whatever has to be done has to be done." For the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the NFL draft was all about trying to give Jameis Winston a better chance to succeed. That not only means surrounding the fifth-year quarterback with playmakers on offense but rebuilding a defense that’s been one of the worst in the league since Winston entered the league as the No. 1 overall pick in 2015.Coach Bruce Arians and general manager Jason Licht began their first draft together since their days of working together with the Arizona Cardinals by selecting five consecutive defensive players over the first four rounds. They interrupted the overhaul by picking Utah kicker Matt Gay in the fifth round, then finished Saturday by taking little-known but speedy Bowling Green receiver Scotty Miller in the sixth round and Missouri defensive tackle Terry Beckner, Jr. in the seventh.“Feel really, really good about this one,” Licht said about the draft haul that began with selecting linebacker Devin White with the fifth overall pick.Cornerbacks Sean Bunting and Jamel Dean, plus safety Mike Edwards are part of the potential fix for a unit making the transition to a 3-4 scheme under defensive coordinator Todd Bowles after allowing the second-most points in the NFL last season.Offensive line and running back are areas of need that were not addressed in this draft.Licht reiterated that the roster is a work in progress.“We still have time to make some additions if we have to,” the GM said.“You can’t address every position that you may have some concerns. Whether they vary from big concern to small concern, you can’t 鈥?it’s just impossible to do it in a small amount of time during free agency or the draft,” Licht said. “But, we have through August to do what we can.”WHO THEY GOTLicht and Arians passed on an opportunity to select the top-rated pass rusher in the draft, Josh Allen, to make White the centerpiece of the defensive overhaul. Bunting could compete for a starting job right away Ronde Barber Jersey , too, while Dean, Edwards, Nelson and Beckner address the need for depth.SURPRISE MOVESelecting a kicker in the fifth round, No. 145 overall, was unexpected, especially considering the single biggest draft-day blunder under Licht’s watch was the decision three years ago to trade up 15 spots to select Roberto Aguayo in the second round, No. 59 overall. The former Florida State star was a major disappointment as a rookie and released after just one season in Tampa Bay.The position has been problematic for much of Licht’s tenure, which began in 2014.The GM insisted he had no qualms about drafting another kicker.“To me 鈥?and to us 鈥?it was a small price to pay to get a kicker,” Licht said. “You wouldn’t say the same thing for a receiver. If a receiver didn’t work out a couple years ago that you took in the second round, would you be afraid to take a receiver in the fifth round? No. This is a very, very important position.”HOW THEY DIDWhile they didn’t opt for any of the top edge rushers in the draft, the Bucs believe White has the versatility to bolster pressure up the middle, be a run-stopper and excel in pass coverage. With at least two starting jobs open in the secondary, Bunting, Dean and Edwards will be added to a mix of young candidates that include 2018 draft picks M.J. Stewart and Carlton Davis.“Competition is a beautiful thing in this league,” Licht said.WHAT’S NEXTThe Bucs have little flexibility under the salary cap to upgrade the roster and likely will need to release, trade or get six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy 鈥?due to make $13 million this year 鈥?to agree to a sizeable pay cut to free up money to sign their draft picks and make other significant moves.
  14. connected to wide receiver Antonio Brown Womens Ronnie Lott Jersey , and it seems unlikely that will change until either a trade happens or the Steelers formally shut down any trade discussions.Brown’s situation has been an evolving one, with Jerry Rice saying he passed along Brown’s interest to 49ers GM John Lynch. However, before all that, tight end George Kittle launched the recruiting process. He tweeted at Brown on New Years’ Eve, and on Thursday, Kittle offered an amusing reason for the tweet in an interview with Jim Rome.I can picture George Kittle and Jimmy Garoppolo hanging out on New Years’ Eve, and a few drinks in, Garoppolo makes the dare. The tweet happened at 10:05 p.m. PT on New Years Eve, so you know they had already consumed a few beverages. It seems pretty easy to picture the entire conversation. Garoppolo jokes that Kittle should tag Brown in a tweet, and Kittle responds that he’ll definitely do it. I have little doubt that there would be virtually no push back from Kittle on this. Then both find themselves snickering until 25 minutes later when Brown responded with the star eyes. There was definitely a high-five after that happened. SANTA CLARA, Calif. Beathard Jersey White , two players expected to be foundation pieces for the 49ers defense were only spectators.Reuben Foster missed his 10th game in two seasons because of injuries and suspension and fellow 2017 first-round pick Solomon Thomas remained on the sideline because he’s not good enough to be on the field at crunch time. While the season-ending knee injury to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo back in September probably ended any realistic chances of the 49ers being contenders this season, the lackluster production from coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch’s first draft class has been a major negative this season as the 49ers (2-8) head into the bye week with the second-worst record in the NFL.When the Niners return next week for the final six games, those second-year players such as Thomas, Foster and cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon need to show they can be foundation pieces the team expected when they were drafted in the first three rounds.“I want them to sit there and really think of what their goals are for the rest of the half,” Shanahan said of his message to the entire team. “Do they want to solidify themselves as a starter, a backup? Do they want to be a part of it here? Do they want to be one of the answers or a solution to what we’re going through? And really when they think about all that and they understand it all and what they want, which I’m sure they all have high aspirations, I want their actions to come back and show that.”The second-year players haven’t shown that yet. Thomas, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2017 draft, has struggled even to get onto the field in pass-rushing situations. He lacks the speed to come off the edge and hasn’t shown the ability to be one of the team’s top inside rushers so he has been mostly relegated to being only a base defender.Thomas’ only sack of the season came when Oakland’s Derek Carr ran out of bounds instead of throwing the ball away two weeks ago. Thomas has just three other quarterback pressures the past seven games. The Niners traded back into the first round in 2017 to select Foster 31st overall. He showed great promise in 10 games as a rookie, but was suspended the first two games this year following off-field issues in the offseason. He hasn’t been an impact player once he returned as he has been hampered in part by shoulder and hamstring injuries.Foster has no sacks Cassius Marsh Jersey White , interceptions, fumble recoveries or forced fumbles in his career and has 10 missed tackles already this year, with his tackle efficiency ranking fourth worst among linebackers with at least 200 snaps.“He’s going to be fine,” defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said. “I get it, in this day and age, with everything needs to happen now. But, I promise you, Reuben is going to be just fine when this is all said and done. Second-year player, to push the panic button is way, way premature in my mind.”Saleh says he believes the second season can be toughest on a player as outside influences can make them forget what made them successful as rookies.Veteran cornerback Richard Sherman sees that mostly as a crutch that needs to be avoided.“Everybody hears about the rookie wall and the sophomore slump,” he said. “Those things can happen. It can be a slippery slope. You can go downhill in a hurry.”The team’s other third-round pick C.J. Beathard http://www.49erslockerroom.com/authentic-richard-sherman-jersey , was benched after struggling in place of Garoppolo. Fourth-round running Joe Williams was cut before the season after never suiting up for the team and two of the bright spots from last year, fifth-round receiver Trent Taylor and seventh-round safety Adrian Colbert, have regressed.About the only success so far from that class has been fifth-round tight end George Kittle, who has emerged as a star in his second year, ranking third among all tight ends with 50 catches for 775 yards this season.“I believe that we can get more out of our guys,” Shanahan said. “I believe that’s up to myself, I believe that’s up to coaches and I believe it’s up to the players. I think there are guys that are doing some good things. But, even the guys who are doing the best, I still think there’s even more.”

While 2018 was a disappointing year for Matthews overall, his best game of the season arguably came against McVay and the Rams in October. Every year, 32 men enter their name into the NFL Coach of the Year sweepstakes. Every year, 31 of them fall short. That’s because the only true way to correctly ascertain the deservingest recipient of all is through process of elimination. Although the headline is a bit of a spoiler (headlines: definitely overrated), let’s conduct an objective, untainted, bias-free experiment anyway Russell Wilson Jersey Green , and see where it takes us.Who automatically isn’t the 2018 NFL Coach of the Year? We know 17 men who aren’t — all the guys without winning records this season. Out are:Arizona’s Steve Wilks*, Atlanta’s Dan Quinn, Buffalo’s Sean McDermott, Carolina’s Ron Rivera, Cincinnati’s Marvin Lewis*, Cleveland’s Hue Jackson*, Denver’s Vance Joseph*, Detroit’s Matt Patricia, Green Bay’s Mike McCarthy*, Jacksonville’s Doug Marrone, Miami’s Adam Gase*, New York’s Pat Shurmur and Todd Bowles*, Oakland’s John Gruden, San Francisco’s Kyle Shanahan, Tampa Bay’s Dirk Koetter* and Washington’s Jay Gruden. *fired anywayFifteen men made the first cut. Who also isn’t in consideration? Anyone who faltered down the stretch in a bid to make the playoffs. You can’t be the CoY if you’re not playing in January. Out are:Minnesota’s Mike ZimmerPittsburgh’s Mike TomlinTennessee’s Mike VrabelApparently, not a great year to be named Michael. If you can help it.Of course we’re down to 12 men. Their teams are in the playoffs. Next to go, among the somewhat deserving, is any coach whose team won fewer games, or the same amount Shaun Alexander Jersey Green , as last year. As if we’re gonna reward someone for showing no improvement, or taking a step back. I think not. Out are:New England’s Bill Belichick (minus two wins)Philadelphia’s Doug Pederson (minus four wins)How about the guys whose teams did pretty well in 2017, were expected to be pretty good this season, and turned out pretty good? What did they accomplish? “Look at all this talent! I made it perform to expectations, in line with their existing and proven ability!” Are we supposed to be impressed? Out are:Baltimore’s John Harbaugh. That Ravens defense was excellent last year, continued to be excellent this year, and they won one more game than last year. Kansas City’s Andy Reid. The Chiefs were preseason AFC favorites and performed near expectations. Los Angeles’ Anthony Lynn. Same story as the Chiefs.Los Angeles’ Sean McVay. The Rams were good to begin with, then they added talent, and then they blew the 1 seed with a mediocre showing in December. A Super Bowl favorite got a first-round bye. Wowee. It would probably have taken a special coaching talent to prevent LA from winning 12 games.New Orleans’ Sean Payton. The Saints were one freak play from the NFCCG a year ago and entered 2018 as arguably one of the five best teams. Drew Brees had the most impressive season of his storied career, which reflects well enough on Payton, but more well on Brees himself. It’s not like Payton is a bad choice; New Orleans won 13 games. But did he really do the best job of all 32 coaches? I doubt it.Who does that leave? Not a lot. Our survivor pool is down to five accomplished men. Let’s use one final argument to eliminate coaches who benefited from good fortune: did the team receive a star or superstar addition during the season? Great coaches shouldn’t receive accolades for being suddenly spoiled with a new All-Pro talent. They ought to be rewarded for overcoming something like the loss of one. Say, if a Hall of Fame safety were to break his leg in Week 4, and his coach still guided the team to the playoffs, it would be more notable than another coach reaching the postseason after adding the best defensive end in the game. Out are:Chicago’s Matt Nagy. (Here, have Khalil Mack. Are you kidding me?)Dallas’ Jason Garrett. (Amari Cooper to a team that lacked only playmaking receivers — hell, maybe Jerry Jones is the real Coach of the Year.)Two candidates remain alongside Carroll: Houston’s Bill O’Brien and Indianapolis’ Frank Reich. Interestingly, all three teams started slow — the Seahawks 0-2, the Texans 0-3 and the Colts 1-5. Props to each coach for pulling off a comeback story within the season.Interestingly, all three teams were in almost every game — the Seahawks lost six times by a total of 28 points http://www.seahawkslockerroom.com/authentic-ed-dickson-jersey , the Texans five times by 20 points, and the Colts six times by 46. Kudos again to each coach for keeping his team in pretty much every game until the end. Only Reich’s Colts lost by more than one score at any point. But here’s the difference: Carroll’s squad took their lumps against a far more difficult top-end schedule. While the Texans and Colts avoided top DVOA teams and lost to middling teams, the Seahawks were busy facing the top 5 teams in DVOA five times. Yes, five games against the five best teams.Seattle: 6 games against top 10 DVOA teams, 2-4 record. 8-2 otherwise.Houston: 3 games against teams in the top 10, 1-2 record. 10-3 otherwise.Indianapolis: 1 game against teams in the top 10, 0-1 record. 10-5 otherwise.Carroll’s Seahawks got the job done against tougher opponents, all year, without the benefit of any significant additions. They thrived after losing the entire Legion of Boom, two Pro Bowl defensive linemen and their top touchdown-maker, relying on their third-string free safety by the end, while bringing in new coordinators all around and working in new talent everywhere. For perspective, Russell Wilson, Justin Britt and Bobby Wagner are the only holdovers from the Super Bowl years who played 15 or more games. Wilson was alone in appearing in all 16.O’Brien and Reich didn’t overcome the tougher schedule or tougher circumstances their colleague in Seattle did. So there’s only one possible conclusion. Pete Carroll, by process of elimination, is the 2018 NFL Coach of the Year.
